Gratitude Thoughts Anyone Can Have

You may have heard that the best way to be joyful is to keep a gratitude journal. But some people struggle to think of what to write in it everyday. If you are one of them, here are some gratitude thoughts that anyone can have. Use variations of these to regularly remind yourself to give thanks.

Gratitude thoughts for life

Your heart beats 30 million to 40 million times a year. That gives you millions of reasons to be grateful. Each beat means that you’re alive. So be grateful for each beat of your heart, because every year 60 million hearts stop beating.

“God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today.  Have you used one to say ‘thank you?'” – William A Ward

Gratitude for love

145 million orphans in the world have no family to love them. Another 100 million people around the world are homeless. If you have someone to love and somewhere to go home to, you have reason to be grateful everyday.

“Wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.” – Kahlil Gibran

Gratitude for senses

Be grateful if you can read this. There are 160 million blind people in the world who can’t. Another 40 million people are deaf. So be grateful when you can hear yet another argument among your kids.

“No one is as capable of gratitude as as one who has emerged from the kingdom of night.” – Elie Wiesel

Gratitude for gratitude itself

Most people are not happy. Only 23% of the world’s population rate themselves as “very happy”. Put another way, only one in five people are grateful for their lives. You can choose to be among the happy ones.

“I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” – G K Chesterton

Make your gratitude thoughts specific

Specific thoughts are more powerful than general thoughts. This is because your mind processes specific thoughts better. The impact on your happiness will thus be greater.

For example, don’t just write “I am grateful that I am loved.” Instead, write “I am grateful that my mother cares enough to call every week to find out how I am.”
