Do Something Good This Weekend

We have 52 weekends a year. If we did just one good thing every weekend, we would be better by the end of the year in 52 ways. Here are some ways you can do something good this weekend.

1. Learn some history

“History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.” – David C McCullough

The news today focuses on current events. We are so caught up in the problems of today that we forget to learn the lessons of yesterday. When reading the news, google the past events you read about to find out more. Or sign up for a free self-paced course on world history and do a chapter each weekend.

2. Make a connection

Each of us lives in a little world of our own. We don’t realise that millions of people are not like us. Think of someone you don’t understand or don’t like, and find out a little more about that person.  Learn about personality differences, or research their background or culture to understand why they act the way they do.

“Since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special attention to those who, by the accidents of time, or place, or circumstances, are brought into closer connection with you.” – Augustine of Hippo

3. Perform a random act of kindness

If you see a chance to help someone this weekend, jump at it. Give someone a treat this weekend without their having to ask for it. Be kind when there is no reason to be.

“Perform random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” – Anne Herbert

4. Make the world more beautiful

This weekend, work on a piece of art or craft and give it to someone. Or display it in your home for your own enjoyment. Play the piano or guitar. Support your local symphony orchestra. Write a letter to someone you care about telling them you appreciate them.

“When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other.” – Chinese proverb

Go do something good

Make every weekend count for something. Sure, relax and watch your videos and play your games. But for just 10 minutes, do one of the above and see how great you feel at the end of the year!

@Mama Kelly, my pleasure. You have an interesting blog! Certainly taught me a few things I didn’t know about Halloween.

@Vincent, good on you!

Tamsin, glad you liked the proverb. I love quotes that make the point so much more concisely and elegantly than I ever could. And thank you for the Halloween and weekend wishes!

Happy Halloween Daphne – had to comment just to say that and also I love the Chinese proverb – what a great way to spend your last 2 pennies, loved it.

Enjoy your w/end too!

Tamsin
